Top Toys for 2008

In the year 2008 we see a comeback of several classic toys, educational toys, and games either with a fresh new look or with additional features. There are also some strong toys on the lists that tie-in to potential blockbuster movies. As always technology plays a major theme in the list while companies are trying to tie in their toys with web sites. Here we will take a look at a few of the Top Toys of 2008 and let you decide what what fits your children’s play personality.

Elmo Live $69
This is the most realistic Elmo yet hence the word ‘Live’. Elmo’s mouth opens and closes much like a Muppet when he speaks, and his mannerisms are right on target he even bobbles his head when speaking. As Elmo Live sing songs and plays games he waves his arms, sits and stands, and even crosses his legs. Get ready for another Elmo frenzied Christmas!

Ozzie and Mack Tag Reading System $49
With a micro camera in the tip of a wand this system reads stories to or along with the kids. They can also scan the wand across the words and pictures of their books to hear the word. This system will be a great way to encourage reading and listening to stories with your child. Along with a great way to start the learning process of reading! It is also a great toy for those long car trips!

Biscuit the Fur Real Robotic Golden Retriever $179
This toys is from Hasbro and this pup obeys six different commands like “sit up and beg”. Along with that, he can do many other things real dogs do like waging his tail when he is petted, chomps on bones, sniffs, and barks just like the real thing. Every child’s best friend.

Digital Camera from Mattel $55
For your photographer in training Mattel has made this camera that can withstand 30 minutes under water and hard drops on the floor. These digital cameras come with 64 MB of memory allowing your kids to store up to 500 images. This also comes with a 1.5 inch LCD viewing screen and has a very nice 1.3 Mega pixel resolution which can print quality 4×6 prints.

VTech V.Motion $69
This will get you kids excited about science, spelling, and arithmetic while doing physical activity at the same time. This has a motion controlled joystick and console system (much like the Wii gaming system). You can also connect it to the Internet so the kids can keep track of their score and also unlocks bonus material.

Animal Scramble $24
This toy gets kids moving while being educational and involves turn taking in the team mode for your 3-5 year old. The giraffe calls out the zoo animals and your little Einstein must identify the animal in record collaborative time. As your child grows older the game changes just calling out the first letter of the animals name.

Hannah Montana Malibu Beach House $179
What is a list without Hannah Montana. This is a replica that allows your child to play alongside the hit Disney TV show “Hannah Montana”.

A.T. Rex $289
Nothing against Hannah Montana but now we are getting into the good stuff! This is the Fisher-Price A.T. Rex which is a very cool looking four wheeler. The A.T. Rex can speed up to 5 mph going forward and around 2.5 mph in reverse. This comes with a 12 volt rechargeable battery.

Cruncher Block and Racer X $39

Can a Toy Have the Nine Lives of a Cat?

Many parents (including myself) love giving their child that new exciting toy their child has been wanting. The look in their eyes when they finally get it is very rewarding. However, the time will inevitably come when the child will throw that toy aside in place of another toy or the words, “I’m bored” will be said but often said much more nasally. At this point the important thing is to get the toy out of the child’s view so they can move on to new meaningful learning experiences with a new toy. If you do not remove the toy at this time the toy will continue to be associated in the mind of the child with the toy they have already fully experience. Later you will be able to reintroduce the toy to your child.

Much like anything the child looses interest in the toy and it can no longer hold their attention. To many parents like myself this becomes very frustrating but try and think of it another way. Your child has explored, created, and learned everything that toys has to offer for the time being.

This is much like a book we as adults read and after completing it we move on to the next book. We don’t continue to hang on to and read the same book. We would be reading the same thing over and over with nothing new and exciting. This is much like a child and their toys. So, next time a child no longer plays with that hot toy of the week then take comfort in knowing they are ready to move on and learn something new.

Now it is time to reintroduce the toy. Again back to the book metaphor after a period of time we sometimes enjoy going back and reading a book we have read before because now we are a different person with many new and different experiences which gives way to a new perception. When the child sees the toys with all of their new knowledge the learning and creative juices will rise up again and that toy will take on a new life of its own. Now providing new and meaningful learning. So, hopefully now your toys can now take on the life of a cat and live out it’s nine lives.
